Thread: Question re Mounting a Roof Rack on a 110

I have just fitted a full length hannibal roof rack of similar construction to a 110, and it came with a U shaped rubber strip which covered the metal rails which sit in the gutter.

Imagine this could be purchased cheaply in Clarke Rubber (or whatever local shop you have there)

Thanks. I suspected a full length rubber was the right thing so the load is distributed right along the gutter not just at four points.

Not sure if this helps but in the roof sill gutter in mine where the rack will sit it is flexible. It feels like sikaflex or something similar under the paint. Not sure if this is on all models though. Having said that the rack I have has a rubber u section that it sits on.

Definately go the full length of rubber to stop dissimilar metals rubbing against each other.

Yes this is common across all Defenders.

i had the factory racks on mine when i got it.....03 fender.....
and yes.....the rubber did run the full length of the rails......

it will hold water in the gutters......and will sit there for days till you open the drivers window.......then it will pour it on your right leg.......
a nice wake up call come winter.....that stuff is ice cold.......

my factory racks had that much rust in them that i threw them out......so keep an eye on them.....they rust pretty easy......keep them painted......
maybe even spray some fish oil inside the tubing........

Funny that you mention rust. The previous owner had taken the rack off and lent it against a wall with the bottom four feet and rail sitting in the garden.

Time passed and when he pulled it out three of the legs had rusted right through. The rail is of better steel and was not in bad condition.

That is why I got it ta a very modest price. Many coat hangers later and much overspray in the garage and the roof rack it is in much better condition.
