    noise in the front end

Hi guys , i have this bad sounding noise at about 50 km/h on a trailing throttle on my TD5 Defender 130 . It's like something vibrating/growling. If you touch the throttle or brake it disappears and is only at a certain speed . Plus to make it worse it's intermittent .

It's got a 2 1/2" lift but the slight vibration at 50 km/h has really just turned into this growling noise . Maybe it's the engine somewhere or the back end but it just sounds like the front driveline

    So far ive checked the

ft uni joints and slip joint
drained the front diff and checked the oil - all good
checked the brake pads - it is missing the anti rattle plates
checked and repacked the wheel brg's
replaced the transfer (not for this reason though)
i removed the front shaft and it was still there
new harmonic balancer - i thought i mention it just in case

I have a slight vibration in my 130 at 50kmh that appears on overrun too. I have a 3" lift on the nose and 1.5" on the rear. My vibration is the front prop uni joint (transfer box end) as the angle is borderline too steep. Might be worth dropping your front prop off, lock the CDL and take it for a run. Avoid heavy right foot treatment when you test this! It'll tel you where the vibration is tho!!

agreed, lift is causing the front shaft vibe. remove and engage cdl, drive it again and report back

Thanks guys , sounds like im on to it now . What had me stumped was the lift had been in it for over 12 months but it must now have a little wear and it's justed started vibrating .
In the market now for a wide angle front shaft or i'll have a double carden joint made up from some bits and pieces i have laying around .
    Thanks again guys

Ok guys , a bit of an update on this . I got myself a brand new wide angle front shaft that a guy bought for a 4" lift and was never used . Fitted this up and it seemed OK .
I then fitted new h/d axle flanges and low and behold it was back again , but it seemed even worse... now doing it while going slow... throttle or brakes didnt effect it .
I jacked it up and ran it without hearing the noise , so took it for a drive and it did it a bit then dis-appeared . But i did nail it down to the front r/h side somewhere inside the hub ... or so it seemed .
Now it started it again intermittently on my way to work on a trailing throttle at around 100 kph . it's like running over the ripple strips on the side of the road .

Any ideas anyone ... could it be the brg/thrust washer thing on the axle/CV joint ???? .... diff seems good (by feel and from no metal in the oil) , wheel brgs are good , swivel brgs are good .... really got me stumped now , Im ready to fully strip the front corner off the axle or buy another front end from a wreck ..... or heaven forbid....... buy a Toyota .
Im nearly over this noise .
