Thread: Puma 2.4l 110 Defender Servicing & Mapping/Chipping Q

G'day Puma owners.

As a recent purchaser of a 2010 2.4 Puma, I'm interested in how much servicing you all do yourselves and how much do you need to go to a mechanic/dealer to cover.

My truck has done 100K kmers and the previous owner had all the services done by the book at the local Landy dealership. I have all the receipts and records of what has been done. It turns out he also had to have a new clutch put in it between the time I first looked at the truck and when I paid for and picked truck up. (Sorry that was an aside).

The other 110 in our family is a 19yo 300tdi which my son works on mostly by himself. The problem I see with my puma is - what about all the electrics etc.

So should I do filters, oils, etc myself? (Yes we do that for the 300tdi).
We can check pads, rotors, bearings, suspension, steering linkages etc easily.


How often should I put the truck through the dealers/rover mechanics to have things really looked over including computer analysis??

I'm totally new to concept of chipping/remapping etc.... I've seen a few threads that deal with MAP and sending off data etc to be remapped etc.


I have a friend with a nanacom for his td5. Is this suitable for reaidng puma's computer etc?

I start off by apologizing if this seems too simplistic, but I've only recently learned most of this as well.

The mapping that's been talked about on recent treads basically mean that with the initial purchase price of the remap, you receive a "device" that can read and programme the vehicle's ECU.

Included in the price is 1 or 2 (depending on the brand) "map" that basically alter the way the computer runs the car (fueling, air mix, egr etc). One map might be for serious off road work and the other for towing. You describe your use and they "map" it for you to suit your application. You also have the option of returning to the factory settings.

The remapping is essentially a bit of computer software that is e-mailed to you and then loaded into the car.

As you now own a reader and programming device you would be able to read and clear faults on the car's ECU as well.

Please correct me if I'm wrong those who know more, but that's my nutshell understanding of the process.
