    Trailer Wiring 2010 Defender 110.

    Hi,
    I have searched the forum but have been unable to get a definitive answer on the need to install a relay box when wiring a trailer socket on a 2010 Defender. I have been told that the electrical system on the Defender is primitive compared with other models, and the relay is not required.. Is there a member that can shed some light on the subject.

    Well, my 09MY has a 20 Amp trailer lights fuse. So reckon on a separate circuit, and the lights can probably be anything. Trailer DIN??? plug up behind the RH rear lights. Reverse I think.

    There is a grey plug either taped on to the chassis or just along side, on the rear right of the vehicle. You can purchase a trailer cable which plugs into this and has a 7 pin flat on the other end, from the dealer or similar or try and get this cable from a Series 2 Discovery.

    This plug has the basics such as lights. indicators and brake lights. If you require a heavy power lead, this is best done using an Anderson plug.

    IIRC, this was in another thread, which said you need to use the trailer harness from Land Rover, or the relay box. Because of multiplexing you can't splice into the tail, brake, indicator, reverse lamp wiring.

    The consensus, was that best to get the Land Rover harness and fit to the plug that Erich spoke of.

    Possibly, but mine was just spliced in by LR and has done thousands of Ks of towing without any issues (other than the dealer's soldering being the crappiest in the world).

    Unless I'm mistaken, the plug doesn't do anything but negate the need for splicing - but it does make a neat job of the install and is therefore probably money well spent.
