    New clutch costs.

    Hi,

I have been quoted $2300 to replace the rattling clutch on my 2009 110, this is from an independent Land Rover specialist on the Gold Coast.

Do you think this is a fair price? Not really knowing what is involved I am a bit unsure.

I am waiting on Bruce Lynton coming back with a quote also, if it is close I may go with them as the 12month parts and labour warranty might be handy considering this is my 3rd clutch.

    thanks
    Pat

    Sounds high to me

I had a 300tdi clutch done for 1450 and that included machining flywheel etc
I'd be asking for a break down in costs at that price

Thanks for that, I just called MR Auto and they came back with a quote of $1500 so that sounds more reasonable, it looks like I will have to drive to Brisbane to save $800

    cheers

Quote came in from Bruce Lynton , $2100 to replace clutch, clutch slave cylinder and machine the fly wheel.

Based on the other quotes I think this is good value, so will book it in.

    thanks

    One word of caution...

Comparing the cost of a clutch change on a 300tdi vs a 2009 is very different. 300tdi does not have a DMf (dual mass flywheel) like a td5 & puma. Consequently, if the price you have been given (initially) included for a new (DMF) flywheel then this where the extra cost will come from.

Now, you say you have a rattling clutch... No point changing the clutch on its own, 99% the problem will be with the DMF starting to fail - DMFs are notorious for it, not jut in Land Rovers.

All that said, if they have slashed the cost they have either taken an item out of there parts list or priced wrong in the first place. You need to understand which. If its the first I suspect you'll still have a rattle after the work is complete, if its the latter then you need to ask if you want to take your car there anyway.

Also, can you successfully machine a DMF???

Didn't think the Puma had a DMF? I think the source of rattles in a Puma clutch is typically the springs?

Not saying that it should be cheap though! Or that DMFs aren't a PITA!

I was under the impression the 2007 - Defender does not have a DMF I am no expert but just basing that on what I read on here.

Just to clarify, I called 3 places for a cost to replace the clutch.

A: was $2300 for clutch kit plus fitting.
B: was $1500 for clutch kit and fitting.
C: was $2100 for clutch kit, clutch cylinder and machining the flywheel.

But you are right, it is the rattle from the clutch and the knocking noise that goes away when the clutch pedal is pushed in that I want fixed so I may get them to inspect it first, but I suspect it is the springs again, as I got my clutch changed out before the last revision of clutches.

    cheers

Definitely no DMF in a Puma...

I once had a fact sheet issued by Land Rover UK around 2007/2008 to explain to potential new customers that they are not just buying and expensive Transit van...

It's one of the 5 or 6 significant differences between the Defender and Transit versions of the engine and ancillaries.

    Cheers,

    Lou

Another difference is they removed the oil bypass centrifuge fitted to the transit!
Which will likely significantly shorten engine life compared to a transit equivalent.

My bad - Learnt something today

In that case, the rattle will be from the springs in the clutch plate.
