i'm re-assembling my rear axle (1989 LR 90). New spring mount brackets were welded to the axle and I have new spring plates to attach to them.
Putting the spring plates onto the brackets the lower lip of the plate contacts the axle before the center meets the bracket. About 2mm. I can wobble the plate side to side as a result. Cant be right?
I cant remember how the original sat or if there were washers between the plate and the bracket. Should the center of the plate sit flat on top of the bracket with the lower lip clear of the axle housing? Can I use a spacer/washer/shim to level it out? Any one else ahd this problem?
Comparing the new plate to the old, they are identical. I fear that the new welded brackets are too low!
I think your fear is well founded, sounds like the new brackets might be a bit short. No big deal, just a little extra work for you- a disc-shaped (or shaped same as the top of the bracket) spacer should easily solve the problem. I'd be liberally coating said spacer with some nickel anti-seize or similar to slow down the return of the corrosion shown in your earlier post.
It woud be best if the plate is supported by the housing .Just try bolting it down without the spring retainer bar .If you think it is a little to much a slight grind of the plate could be the go
I think if I try and bolt it down as it is the outer spring seat of the plate might distort to the shape of the axle housing - not good for level seating of the spring.
Spacer I think I can manage. I take it the lip of the spring seat should make no contact at all with the axle casing? How much of a gap is the norm?
Heres a pic of the plate resting on the axle case... perhaps someone can check theirs and let me know how much clearance they have between plate and axle ... if any?
