    doing the sums

I agree with working out how much it is worth. Keep in mind a few things.

you loose the residual of your insurance for that year including the green slip.
all the bolted on accessories go to insurance.
it is a pain in the bum to find another landy.

Insurance pay on the glasses guide for agreed value. When son's ute was written off not long after he bought it we were able to show that the offered amount was lower than the cost of replacing it. I took the list price of 14 of the same year on the net to provide an average cost. The only arguing point was the value of the bull bar which the insurerer wrote down the new price to 50 % as residual value.

    do your sums carefully.

How does that work? I don't think I have ever seen that as an option on any of my policies, but then again I might not have been looking in the right place...
I wrote off my 2003 Defender a few years back but when I submitted the insurance claim I advised the insurer (AAMI) that I wanted first offer to buy the wreck. They assessed it. came back with a payout figure and an acceptable buy back price to which I agreed on and all was settled in 10 days.

I just tried to arrange salvage rights with G I O and was told they dont do that

I have found it very difficult to insure my Defender for what its worth they all seem to think that its 10 K less than it would be worth to replace.
I actually rang Shannons thinking that they would be better but they were actually worse???

    No idea who to use

Try JUST, they insured me with Portals and a high agreed value for less than I was paying with Alliance prior to portals at market value.. Covered everywhere as long as its kept legal/roadworthy and the modifications are listed.

And I am pretty sure I have first option salvage rights...... will check that today.

I've just been through the exact same issue with my D2a. I was insured with SGIO but the agreed value on the renewal was reduced by almost 30%. Based on market rates and condition it should have been a 10-15% drop. Rang up to enquire and apparently they had a change in internal valuation policy so no further adjustment upward was possible.

Went on line and checked a number of companies. RAC and QBE both would do a realistic agreed value and in the end I went with RAC which saved $150 on the premium as well.

After my positive experience with Lumley Special Vehicles last year, agreed value is the way to go for a stress free claim.

    Cheers

    Steve

Hope your ok after that! Has the doc said your ok to drive again?.
Also will you be able to buy the wreck back to get the spares for your next def? Or are you looking to get something different?
My car is currently insured agreed with Shannon's but I will need to add the winch when I fit it.

I walked away unscathed (incredible considering the speed/time of day/vehicles/trees involved) and was driving an almight hyandai excel the next day. Unfortunately not getting another landy... yet. Decided to go on hiatus to europe with the insurance money since it's not enough to get a decent defender!
