Thread: TD5 Heater

The motor isn't behind the console, it's under the bonnet, I'd be checking to see if the motor is free to rotate, really easy job to remove the motor compared to most cars , stick a new fuse in and see if the fuse blows with the motor disconnected, chances are it's the fan motor causing the problem or a wire has rubbed through somewhere.

While you are trouble shooting it maybe easier to use a resetting circuit breaker instead of a fuse. I have one that is the same blade format as a blade fuse, and use it when I have a fuse that keeps blowing.

fit the breaker and then work through the wiring - systematically from one end to the other. In the case of the heater fan, start with the fan motor itself.

This what the heater looks like when it is out:



the motor is attached directly to the fan on the right. It is located under the passenger side wing against the firewall. First off, get a multimeter and pull te plug on the wires to the motor. You will be able to tell here if the motor is shorting at all, and if not this is your starting place to trace back with.

Ok. SO the fuse is fine.
There seems to be power to the motor. Is the plug with a male/female connection that is spliced into another loom?

There is perm power to that. There was a lot of water in the heater under the wingtop as the drain hole was blocked (fairly standard). THere is water in the fins of the fan cowling?

Thoughts?

Dry it out and check for shorts,continuity through the motor then give it another try, if you've got a jump pack or spare battery bench test it (fused of course ) could have been water in the motor.

Yeah. I think it is stuffed. The cowling was fairly tight. I had to spin it free by hand. How "free" shoudl it be?

A replacement motor is $300+. FFS. And it is a nightmare of a job - have to remove AC unit inside cab to get to bolts to get heater off.

The motor should spin freely, if its sticking it'll draw more power trying to spin which is why the fuse blew, is it free now, what was it stuck on ? It may be ok or the bearing may have gone, is there any freeplay in the motor ?

It is fairly free now. The fuse is not blowing now. It is getting power. But not spinning. Hmmm.

I can get the fan out of the UK (Paddocks) Britpart Fan for 59 pounds.

So when l can be bothered pulling half the car apart l'll do the change.
