    Engine Watchdog

    Hello,
I have purchased one of these ENGINE WATCHDOG TM2, Engine Temperature Sensor and Low Coolant Alarm

I'm wondering if any of you people have fitted one? If so where did you mount the sensor - engine block or thermostat housing.

Its for my defender 300 TDI

    Any help appreciated

    Regards
    Andrew

The one you linked to is not a low water alarm - is a water temp, low oil pressure alarm.

I have a Engine Saver TM2 Combo (different brand to Engine Watchdog) that alarms if coolant levels drop and it the engine block (not coolant) is getting hot. Works really well and is sold by a AULRO member.

Do a search through google for AULRO Engine Saver TM2 Combo you will see discussion on it.

    Thanks Garry,
Im not sure why the text on the link changed to what was displayed. I copied the link into the post. You are correct, the unit purchased is a temperature sensor. I was wondering if I should mount the sensor on the thermostat housing or engine block. I am not interested in the oil pressure just an accurate measure of engine temperature.
    regards

Pretty sure this exact question was asked a few months ago, but I don't recall the title of the post.

When I had my 300tdi I installed the sensor on the RH side of the head, and it was around 10cm rear of the head. I personally wouldn't put it on the block as I think the head is where you are going to see the temperature rise first (highest point, first to lose water, exposed to all the combustion heat etc).

I've had them on a couple of Tdis and I put them on the lower thermostat housing bolt. Seems to work well there.

In my view the thermostat housing is not the greatest place to put the sensor as it is influenced by the temp of the water which may not be a true indicator of the actual temp of the head.

On my V8 I have the sensor on a a bolt that bolts into the head an it shows a consistent temp most of the times. My water gauge temp goes up and down mainly in line with outside temps - a few degrees higher on really hot days. However the Engine Watch sensor is not greatly impacted by outside temp but when stopped in heavy traffic it starts to rise while the water temp does not move a lot.

To me having the sensor connected to something on the head away from external influences such as coolant temp (yes you do need a gauge to measure this as well) then I feel I am getting a better picture what is going on engine temp wise. Of course with the TM2 if you loose coolant the alarm tells you immediately irrespective of the engine temp.
