Camshaft ok?
Hey guys,
Mid rebuild on a 200tdi and not too sure about this camshaft. Some slight rust on the cam followers though feels incredibly smooth.
Anyway to check the tolerances here? ImageUploadedByTapatalk 21373954512.149489.jpg

If that is rust (the piccie's a bit hard to see) then the wear surface of the lobes is likely to be on its way out. Was the camshaft stored in a damp place - how'd the rust get there? Should be plenty of oil in the galleries of a working engine, but if not then you'd likely see a lot of wear on the lobes.
If the lobes are only slightly worn and virtually in the same condition for all 8 lifters then the camshaft is probably fine. What about end runout - have you checked that yet? And does the 200 TDI use the same vacuum pump as the 300 TID? If so then what's the condition of that lobe - these are a common point of wear.
