    Defender Tdi Auto transfer.

My previous posts re LT230 ascertain:

    Transfer marked 1.410 ....but

Recent fitment of 255/ 33" tyres have made the ratio high and more so than expected.

I have previously assumed that the Transfer was disco 122 ratio fitted with the auto but....

I suspect that the transfer was converted to 122.

I am looking at other options to try and confirm what's fitted without removing and counting teeth.

With previous 235 it would Lock up at 90-95 kmh and top speed 140 on the flat.

With current 255 it Locks up at 90 and would better previous speed should the Tdi be more powerful than a Victa Lawnmower (do they still exist?)

What can I do? Other than ditch the 255 and leave Salisbury trails wherever I go.

    Regards

    Remove

You mean I can do this in situ?

    I'm hoping so.

yes, open your floor between the seats and you just undo the round pto cover on the back of the transfer case, you may have to give the bearing holder a gentle tap to free and then just reach in and pull back the gear if it hasnt already slid out, i replaced mine with a brandnew one from the UK for 45pounds.
Its very very simple to do

1.410 has 26 teeth, but thats not conclusive
because apparantly the 1.2's can have 26, 28 or 38,

you might find this calculator handy

Sorry for the highjack. Are we saying that you can change transfer ratios by just removing the rear cover and exchanging gears ??

NO- you can replace with new same tooth count gear by back cover only

to change LT230 gear ratio you have to drop the transfer case and replace the whole gear train, tx case has to come out because only way to replace intermediate gear is to pull the intermediate shaft & it comes out the front.

just a quickie, the lower the output ratio IE the faster the output shaft turns for a given road speed, the earlier the TC will lockup. Leaving the 1.410 high range causes the TC to lock at around 70km/h road speed on std tyres, my reason to leave it alone if towing to keep the temps down.
