So I have upgraded from a 1999 hilux to a 2009 Defender 130 with all the bells and whistles. The new rig seriously has everything.
I just have a question. The defender has what looks like 2 snorkels. The standard one on the right and some sort of beefed up filtered air intake setup on the left side of the bonnet.
Can anyone tell me what the second 'snorkel on the left side might be and what it does?
I'd suggest you open the bonnet and have a look to see where the pipe work goes... It could be a seriously tweaked engine and be another engine air take, or it could simply be a raised air intake for the heater.
From my understanding, that grill from where the pipe emanates is the air intake for the cabin heater box, so it looks as though someone has waterproofed it for water crossings by adding the additional snorkel and filter.
I have mine blanked off!
There may something else going on though, but that's my guess.
I pick her up on Friday. A bit of a sad story behind the car. The old owner spent 3 years and THOUSANDS of dollars getting it ready for the Cape and a trip Broome. However, he sadly passed away before he and his wife could go on the trip.
I plan to do the Cape in it next year and the dealership said they would forward on a picture of the car up at the Cape.
I think I will be spending the first few weeks trying to work out exactly what he has done to this rig
Looks like a great vehicle, I sure agree that the 130 is the ideal big-trip vehicle, that's why I have mine.
That snorkel and precleaner setup is attached to where the inlet for the heater and aircon goes, given that the guy died, i wonder if perhaps he had a respiratory illness and has set it up to make the cabin air as clean as he possibly could. It's certainly way over the top having precleaner, air filter etc for the cabin ventilation, but that seems plausible.
My guess is the donaldson aircleaner on the roof is a fresh air filter for the a/c - heater - fresh air inlet .
Its either because the previous owner was ashmatic or had an aversion to dust, The idea is to pressurise the interior with clean air/ thus stopping dust / pollen ingress.
I have exactly the same system on my caravan using a marine bilge fan and it works beautifully.
It looks like a solution to pressurise the cabin without sucking in any dust. "If I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it right" seems to have been his reasoning.
It's a shame so much time was spent setting up the vehicle for the trip. And they say there is no such thing as too much preparation... hmmmm.
It would be nice if you get that deefer up the cape, mindful of his contribution.
