You work quick! It would have taken me weeks to check all that. :p
Forced motivation :) new h-duty xtreme clutch in, gearbox high pressure cleaned and ready to put back in tomorrow. 2days off the road. Havnt done something this big for a few years now and enjoyed it. It made me appreciate my defriender even more, so many access holes, none of those annoying bolts you can't see and can even get to the top of the bell housing so easily in the bonnet. A marvel. Did lose my mind on the handbrake cable though, couldn't get it through the grommet, it got a piece of my mind haha.

Sorry mate but this is not the case.
Even with springs missing, or buggered, the clutch will engage fully, which means you have an issue with the selector fork preload adjustement. It could be worse but I doubt it at this stage..
Which springs? As above, the dampening springs in the friction plate itself will have little to no impact on function, unless every connection between the two friction surfaces was severed and they were spinning. In which case it'd last about 0.5 seconds.
The pressure plate springs provide clamping force and so you'd go nowhere fast but should feel no resistance through the clutch pedal either.
Well, new clutch, extreme off road heavy duty and all back in and been running fine ever since. Had the bro in law check the clutch and also had a chat to a mate who owns a clutch and torque converter specialty mechanic and both said clutch had a full failure. must have broken everything internal to the clutch. Its still somewhere around, can post a pic if its something you'd like to see. But been towing with and driving it since thursday night and not one issue.
pressure plate still had all fingers in tact so the pedal feel never went away hence why i thought it was a gearbox issue.
Bro in law said (as he is a truck diesel mechanic) this is what he sees a lot in semis. The clutch will destroy itself internally and in some cases do what mine did and work sometimes but other times as the springs roll in the housing they hold the plate open and stop all drive.
So good news it was the cheaper of the two. $480 for the HD clutch which inc a centering tool and thrust bearing as opposed to a standard one at $280 with no tool or thrust bearing. easy choice.
As mentioned above, all the dampening springs let go and also when i unbolted the pressure plate a few small (looked like heavy duty springs the size you'd find if u pulled a click pen apart) fell out also. i understand the theory behind how a clutch works but not much about the internals. (about to look on 'howstuffworks.com' to get the idea)
Found a receipt and kms when it was put in and it looks like it has only done 80000kms on this clutch. I havnt towed anything over 1500kgs or done anything silly 4wd or clutch banging either. just a failure i guess. This deefer does have air lockers and i think the last owner did a fair bit of offroading so weather that has something to do with it???
Im just happy its fixed.
