HEEEEELLP!!! lost all gears and drive 300TDI

    Hi all,

yesterday i was driving when i selected 4th it wasn't there, back to third-gone, back to forth-no worries. Drove for about an hour then same again but this time no gears at all and had to stop. turned off engine, looked under car-nothing, got back it, selected neutral in selector box then back in low range, selected 1st and drove off like nothing had happened. Then 20mins down the road when taking off from the lights went to select 3rd and nothing again in any gear. stopped and tow truck home.

Bro in law (truck diesel mech) had a look last night and thinks clutch?? still a little unsure.

So far i have removed transfer case inspection plate=excellent condition
removed front drive shaft and when in gear this can be held still by hand
the noise is a gear on gear noise like it hasn't selected properly not a broken gearbox noise of metal parts clanking (have blown gearboxes in the past in other cars)
today i will be taking the box out as we think the issue will be between the bell housing and transfer case.

If it is the box, any help to find a new (second hand) one will be great (or a great repair place in south australia)
if there are any other possibilities please help. I will be checking this thread all day for answers/reply posts.

This is my daily so i need it back on the road ASAP and I'm half way through a job i need to get back to aswell.

    Thanks in advance.

If it's getting drive back there can't be too much wrong. It's not jumping out of hi range and your inadvertently putting it back in when going to low and back?

Stripped output shaft spline on a R380 gearbox?

Edit: see if it drives with the CDL locked.

    Do something easy first

Do something easy first, have a look at inside your drive flanges where the axle spline's come through.

Then do as Bee utey said, take the rear inspection plate off the transferbox and remove the top gear by pulling it back off the spline. check that spline it sits on.

I hate starting at the wrong end first when trying to diagnose a problem.

If the gear stick feels funny check the grub screw on the top of the box that connects the shifter to the selectors. This happened to Bushie on our last trip with his 300Tdi.

Sounds exactly like the way his went

    Yep, sounds selector-related to me?

Agreed, happened to my mums 1985 90 with those kind of symtoms. we were 20miles from home and she couldn't drive it but I could. However, I was only 16 with no drivers licence but we'll gloss over that!

Probably the first repair I ever did on a Landy! First of many!

    Thumbs down

    Checked the spline, looks good.
Gear lever felt normal when this all happened.
Box oil looks fine-no metal in oil
Clutch looks ok, mite have a closer look

I can select a gear turn the input shaft and the outputs turn but if I hold one it stops..... Is that normal??

    I am stumped.

That's the centre diff differentiating. Lock the CDL and try again.

Yes, the centre diff allows one shaft to stop rotating, but the other turn.

If that happened with the centre diff locked, it would not be normal.
