    Ignition? Starter?

Hey all, having a real issue with what I think may only be the ignition. Hoping for some thoughts and advice before the weekend where I can have a look. 2003 defender, just started totally out of the blue, when turning key to two for glow plugs and check lights it's clicking and lights going off and on. When totally turned to start position (3) absolutely nothing. Been able to find the perfect click and position every morning and start to get to work but this can't go on. As per usual bad timing had the slave go on me this time last week and we're off to Europe in three weeks! Wasn't planning on spending any money on the landy! Thanks in advance..

Quite possibly the ignition switch, they are a common failure.

Thanks bigjon, is this an expensive fix or a simple part found on eBay etc? Or will the whole barrel need replacing? Thanks..

It's the part at the bottom of the barrel & looks like this:

It could also be loose where it's crimped together but a new one is probably best if it is loose now.

Just google the part number and you'll find lots of vendors on the web. You'll likely find a better price but will have to pay postage (and it'll take some time to reach you, too).

    Great picture to explain Scott,
I also like how the picture convientiently excludes the 563 steps prior to gently holding the switch between your left thumb and forefinger

landcol, defintiely worth checking the wiring connectors to the back of the switch prior to buying parts, the blade connectors have a habit.... oh and make sure you pack your triple jointed size 2 hands before removing the binnacle

Haha oh great sounds fun. Especially when I'm meant to be flat out working. Will that simply be a case of taking out the dash etc to inspect? Or is there those break bolts securing it? Think they may only be in the ignition themselves from memory..
