Circa 373mm
Hey all,
can any one tell me the length of a TD5 to R380 bellhousing?
cheers
Serg
Circa 373mm
Thanks Pete.
can someone confirm this, Pete may have made a typo, im not sure??? I just measure that 300tdi bell housing and its approx 240mm long. This is only the main alloy body that bolts to the steel case and up to the very short cuved alloy cast that is bolted to the engine block. Even so, including that other short alloy housing still brings it approx 100mm short of Pete's 373mm???
That would either make the gearbox and T/case further back and a longer front shaft required than a Tdi, or the Td5 is way forward and more so than a Tdi which I didnt think possible?
i'm definitely correct![]()
I can confirm that Pete is 100% correct at 373mm. I just measured the TD5 bell housing I have in the shed. It's the bell housing alone with no gearbox attached.
Cheers, David.

Hi there,
considering similar things.
Have a Defender with currently fitted Td5.
Want to convert the car into something less complicated such as 300 TDI, Mercs engine or so.
Assuming that there's someone with R380 and fitted bell housing on stock or currently dismanteled.
Need to know the dimensions shown in the below sketch (not at certain scale). Does not depend on a millimeter...
A = length of flywheel housing - "backplate"
B = distance friction surface to mating face
C = pitch diameter of bolts
D = protrusion of pinion nose diameter
E = distance of nose face to release bearing guide
F = length of pinion nose
Thanks and regards!
Hi there!
Did anyone get back to you on those dimensions for the R380?
I am contemplating fitting an Isuzu 3.9 to the defender and trying to find out similar data
I have a 300 Tdi and R380 in my truck already but to save time it would be nice to know in advance rather than pulling it out to measure it
