    Gearbox oil

    I apologize for a thread that may well have been done to death but type the word 'oil' in the search and its ridiculous how many hits and nothing to do with gearbox oil!!

    Got a TD5 and would like to replace the gearbox oil, what are my best options for a smoother change as 2nd can sometimes catch and if I'm sat at the lights 1st is sometimes stiff to engage. 90% of the time though gears are fine

    I have been using redline MTL in my 98 130 , very expensive but it works well . I am sure there are cheaper oils that work .

    I use Penrite ProGear 75W-85, still have a slight snick 2nd to 3rd if change is fast. I get it from Malz when on special.

    This thread is the tops for all oils Oils - can we set up a definitive list post #29 by Rick130 is ideal

    I've just switched to the Redline MTL.

    I was using the Penrite Synthetic ATF without issue prior to this. I had tried the earlier version of the Penrite Light Gear oil on an LT77 (Range Rover classic 5 speed) and found that too thick. It baulked on gear changes driving across the Nullabour, so if that wasn't enough to warm it nothing was.

    The Penrite Synthetic ATF data sheet shows that it has better high temp stability and shear strength than the current Light Gear Oil.

    When I returned from Cape York last month I noticed some baulking with gear changes while using the ATF and wondered whether I should try the MOTUL oil, especially since I engage the overdrive in fifth, which would provide greater load and heat in the gearbox. I made enquiries and the MOTUL guy recommended the Redline. In the end, the baulking was the result of low clutch fluid So I just topped that up and bled it and solved the problem. The MTL though does have better strength and stability than the ATF, so I'm giving that a go.

    I have a question. My car used ATF Dexron IID since new until it went like 120.000 km, when I changed to MTF94. I used it during 20.000 km and then went back to ATF due to money problems in my side. Now I can go with MTF94 again, but some people told me dont do that, your gearbox (212.000 km) have too much tolerance in the inside right now, better keep going with ATF..... what do you think? is OK to go with MTF?
