rear discs/hubs on my 98 Defriender

    Hi all,

Just a quick question about my rear hub setup.
Is this standard or aftermarket? if aftermarket any ideas what is it so i can prepare for parts in the future.

It has receipts for everything but i haven't found anything for this mod if it is a mod.

    Thanks

The end cap is a Maxidrive upgrade. I think they were available seperately, but you might be lucky - Maxidrive axles usually came with these end caps. Has it got a rear locker?

Some caps are tight from day one, others weep. If there's any sign of oil around the bolts, they'll tighten by at least half a turn. Check regularly.

Otherwise, the slotted studs indicate the hubs will accept alloy wheels, such as the "Boost".

    Regards

As Max mentioned, the flanges are Heavy Duty replacements. Not necessarily Maxi Drive,if Maxi Drive, they usually have MD or similar stamped into the flange somewhere. If you undo the large nut,Maxi Drive and the later Hi Tough axles usually have something stamped into the end of the axles.

Thanks, Good to know, it has a front air locker and with all the receipts it looks like the original owner hasn't spared a cent on anything so good to know. No issues I had just noticed that i hadn't seen this centre much so thought id get a headstart incase.

Its originally from Geelong way if it looks familiar, (i purchased it from east Vic last year and brought it to SA) a lot of work done by an ocean grove mechanic.

    Thanks again.

as the others have posted, those drive flanges, not hubs (hubs are the things that the wheels and disc rotors bolt up to, and house the wheel bearings) look to be Maxi Drive. They well could be another copy brand. BUt FWIW, when I got my locker supplied and installed by MD in about 2000/01 it came with those exact looking flanges. MD didnt start machining MD in the ends until later. Also they increased the length of the drive flange and their axles so that there would be more spline engagement. This came about I believe because of the premature wear of splines at the drive flange. IMO this was due to the fact that the wheel bearings running in grease where no longer lubricating the splines, and most owners where not doing that themselves. Thats not to say the longer splines dont need lubrication, they indeed do. The big nut on the end is the same size as the hub nuts that set the pre load on the wheel bearings, 52mm. If you undo this nut, there may be some markings on the end of the axle that would let you identify if they are OEM or after market. Just crack the nut a very little, jack that side of axle up somewhat and then undo. This will help stop oil spilling out if the bearings have been returned to oil lube.

If you take a pic, from the rear, of the diff and to left of centre, we may also be able to tell if it has a locker or not.... then again does it have switches in the cabin (arb or other) or any little green lights that say Maxi Drive?

Now i think of it when i blew my clutch and we had to push it from the curb into the drive at hard lock it sounded like it had a locker as the inside wheel skipped across the ground. my old man did ask why it was doing this.

Theres the answer i guess, thanks

If there is no external sign of a rear locker it cod be a Detroit fitted. With handbrake on, ack up o e rear wheel and try to rotate it forwards and backwards. If it rotates one way but seems to engage the other it's a Detroit.
