Is there a difference between '91 & '96 Defender front hubs.

I have the front calipers from a '96 Defender, to fit ventilated rotors to my '91 Defender.

Is there a difference that would prevent me getting standard '96 rotors?

I think Serg went through this previously. The hubs are different,as they fit the different length stub axles. The early hub is Pt No.FRC6139 and the later is FTC859.The early type allow the fitting of the wide spaced wheel bearings as fitted to vehicles that take a 2522 CV.The later type take the narrow spaced bearings fitted to vehicles from vin LA930435 ie very late 200tdi with ventilated discs on the front.

so the way I am reading this:

Diana has a 91 axle assembly hub to hub, and wants to run later, ventilated brake rotors. The 91 calliper is not wide enough to fit a ventilated, thicker rotor. So will a 96 calliper bolt up and be in the correct location for the later ventilated rotor?

AFAIK the 91/96 callipers are the same except they added a spacer in between the calliper halves to allow for the ventilated rotor. But I can not be 100% sure. The mounting bolts could have gone from SAE to metric?? I know that my 98 callipers bolt up with metric double hex bolts, but the calliper halves themselves bolt together with SAE bolts.

The other question is will the 96 rotor be the correct offset to land in the correct location? I do not know. Im pretty sure this was a common conversion in the UK and guys just added the spacer to their older callipers and used the appropriate rotor. I would ask on LR4x4 if no one here can give you a definite answer.

You could also google the rotors and see if the offsets are correct for your application. You will also need to know if the distance from rotor mounting surface on hub is the same distance from calliper mounting surface on housing to allow for differences there.....

See if you can source some old rotors and callipers and fit them up. That is the only way to know for sure.

    Thanks.

I can do all that, but the Defender is on the other side of Sydney and was hoping that someone may know the answer and I can just order the correct rotors and have them ready for Friday.

The issues as I see them are:
    • Is the relationship between the '96 calliper offset and back of the '96 hub, the same as the relationship for the back of the rotor as the '91 caliper and '91 hub? (which I believe is true) And.
    • Is the mounting bolts/PCD for the '91 rotor the same as the '96?
    • And if not! Is there a standard ventilated rotor that will meet my needs?

Buy vented rotors to suit your defender, the calipers will bolt straight on.
I just did this on my rangie. Defender vented calipers (all the same), defender vented rotors all on wide spindles from a county (that's what was laying around in the shed) on 84 rangie wide hubs ( once again laying around) on 94 rangie swivels and unknown swivel housings.
In other words, it all just bolts together.

with a quick bit of googling:

LANDROVER DEFENDER 1983-2013 DIESEL-110 W / BASE FRONT BRAKE PARTS

Land Rover One Ten / Defender 110 Parts Book - Land Rover Technical Blog

It shows 2 different calliper mounting bolts and 2 different rotor-hub mounting bolts. Could be a simple metric/SAE thing or could be they changed the bolt to a pre loctited type and ditched the split washer??? If you look at the brake rotors on the shop link, its hows the hole in the middle is near identical 101 vs 101.6 and it shows 2 rotors within 1.2mm offset of each other (one vented and solid)

Afaik its the bolt thread thing. That was the only trouble I had, I had to get a bolt that was from memory 12mm with a 1.5 pitch. Where as the other caliper mounts I had were a fine thread same as the rears. (I'd lost the bolts)

I take it the bolts you had on hand to mount the rotor to the hub where out of said hub but still fitted through the hole in the later rotor?

The rotor bolts shouldn't be a problem because I'll use the ones for the '91 hubs and the calipers I hope I kept the bolts ( ).

The issue will be the offset and PCD of the holes in the rotor and if they've changed,

I've bitten the bullet and ordered the rotors that I hope will be correct.

well going by what Vern has said the pcd hasnt changed! The reason I was comfirming about the bolts size/dia as if they were SAE in 91 (your hub) say 1/2in and they went to metric in 96 (the rotor you want to use), say 12mm, depending on how accurate the hole is drilled you may not have got the 1/2 bolt through the 12mm hole. Again the bolt that fits the swivel housing may not pass through the later calliper, but........

anyway seems as Vern has done it so should be ok. Post up your findings when you do it.
