    BULGE IN MY TOP HOSE

Driving home from work the sarvo (5 min trip) i started getting this burning smell .i kept my eye on the temp gauge and it stayed normal. As soon as i got home i lifted the lid and found my top radiator hose was leaking coolant from the connection to the engine block ,my first thought was the clamp must've been loose and wasn't holding the hose tight enough on its port but then i noticed the bulge.
The bulge stuck out maybe 1- 2cm wider then the rest of the hose and seemed to be forcing the clip open letting the coolant drip out . I gave the engine a feel and it was hot .
could it just be a rooted hose or some kind of pressurising problem

I drained the system two days ago ( while i was changing manifold studs ) could my procedure have been wrong

i drained the system through bottom hose drain screw
flushed with normal water on a low pressure
i then put the drain plug back in and did a test with normal water to see how much it was going to take . i pulled the bleed screw out and filled up the expansion tank until i had a good stream flowing out of the bleed hole .
I then put the bleed screw back in and drained it all over again .
once it was all empty the drain plug went back in the bleed screw came out and i filled with a a 50/50 mix of OAT long life coolant (the red stuff) and demineralised water kept filling till i had a good stream out the bleed whole put the screw back in filled tank to max level and started her up . i kept it running till it reached normal running temp and that was it .
Today was the first time id driven it since i replaced the coolant and and the manifold studs so I'm thinking maybe I've stuffed something up.

    Any suggestions ????
    cheers

    Hi,

I've had that happen a few times with different vehicles, usually because the rubber in the hose has perished, possibly due to either old age or over temp, sometimes both.

    Regards,

I had this happen in the County (V8) one time, and it spilt before I could replace it as I found the bulge after it had split.

Turns out they were selling 2 types of hoses, just plain rubber ones and rubber ones with some strengthening along the host which you can see if you look at the end of the hose.

As it was only a few months old, they replaced it with the strengthened hose and it hasn't had a problem since.

Thanks fellas for the quick replies . I guess I'l be picking up a new hose in the next couple off days might try find one of those strengthened ones your talking about Richard . It doesn't explain why the thing was so darn hot though. It was such a short drive and only a couple of little hills no speeds over 60kms .the hose felt like it was under a fair bit of pressure it was really tight . when i flushed the system i took the top hose off and had a look inside to see how clean it was and there was a bit of brown looking muck in there not sure what that means
im thinking i mite not drive it until i get the new hose and sort out whats going on the last thing i want is a hose giving out on me .
    thanks again fellas

Mine wasn't that old, and I used to live about 10km out of Brisbane and it burst about half way home, luckily I had the old one in the back.

They get up to temperature real quick, just think anything over about 70 degrees will feel really hot, pressure could be just because the thermostat hasn't opened yet.

All just a bit of a brain dump, hope you get it sorted.

Don't forget your exhaust gases are 400+ degrees and your thermostat most likely won't even open until 80-90 degrees. Anything over 65 will feel very hot and 70 will burn you instantly.

The cooling system will be under pressure when it heats up and is working normally, hence the tight hose.
