Both will increse with speed as you report.

Wheel bearing will be constant - not changing with power on/off, and will still be there if you coast in neutral.

Diff nearly always is only under load (throttle on). goes quite coasting in neutral.

You report it only noisy while accelerating so I say Diff.

Should be able to hear if coming from front or rear, but it is hard.

Yeah Ok - changed the front diff oil on Sunday and although it appeared that someone had put hard grease into it - it hardly ran at all it had no metal in it.
The rear diff showed up nice and clean on the finger through the fill hole so I'll drop it and see.
Is the 130 HD Rover diff the same as the D2 diff?
Someone recently told me that it is the same as a P38A diff???
I thought hat they were all the same.

Sorry if im offtrack but I had to ask, why has a 2000 td5 130 got the p38 rover diff? the change over year was 03, (my 02 , 110 has a sals rear)
Did it get wrecked or swapped out?

It is a Defender HC 130 td5.

Likewise I understood that all Defenders have a rear Salisbury diff.
Others have advised me that these models were not fitted with a Salisbury.
It has a Rover looking diff with the diff/axle housing heavily trussed/gusseted.
When I asked if the diff was the same as the front diff I was told "no the front diff is as per D1/D2 but the rear diff is as per P38A"

Perhaps someone can enlighten us both further?

My 2000 td5 Defender 130 (with the HD Rover rear diff - not Salisbury) has a rumbling noise that becomes audible at about 30 kph and gradually gets noisier with increased speed. At 100 kph one needs ear muffs!

The noise is the same in Hi and Lo ranges so it does not appear to be gearbox or transfer box related. Anyway I have recently put in a new transfer box and the noise is still there proving that it is not the LT230T.
The noise is only on accelerating.

Is this wheel bearing or diff - My guess is diff???
Are there any easy ways to determine front to rear diff?

Any help appreciated.

Had a similar probLem years ago, on that occasion it proved to be the universal joint....!


It maybe a long shot, but I think it may be worthwhile checking the U/joints.

The front prop shaft is now a new complete shaft with no change.
The rear U joints tested and are good.

A Salisbury has a rear cover that has an identical bolt pattern to a D60 but has a right angle bottom lip on the right side if your looking at it from behind.

In most peoples opinions the Salisbury is stronger and it is more easily strengthened further also coping with a locker like a Detroit better. As it is basically identical to a D60 just with different ratios and metric. E.g. I've bought an ARB cover for a D60 diff from a wreck that I will put on soon.

the 90 always had a rover and from 03 the defender 110/130 had the p38, but if your 2000 model has a p38 it could have been swapped out by a previous owner or under warranty, stick up a pic from behind and we could all tell.
