anyone had an oil cap loosen itself?

Just looked under the bonnet cleaning the car and noticed an oil stain on the bonnet. Turns out the oil filler cap was just sitting there - not screwed in at all!

So the question is did it loosen over the 3000 km since the service two weeks ago or was it not tightened at said service?

Oil is now on the loom and splattered across the place and I feel like an idiot for not checking sooner. Been unimpressed with dealer anyway (previous post) and did notice a performance difference on getting it back. Low on oil now and have to take it to a dealer again.

Stuck in Sydney for the second time after a service!

No. That's never happened to me.
Sounds like it wasn't tightened properly.

So you haven't lifted the bonnet for 3000km ?

But - definitely shouldn't have been the kind of oversight that was allowed to leave a workshop that is taking your money.

If properly fitted it won't loosen in service but as you said, you could have checked.

Afraid so. I do feel rather dull. The last two weeks went rather quickly and a trip from Melbourne to Sydney to Port Maquarie to Sydney and a week of work eats the kilometers. I check on every clean which is normally weekly.

I have yet to learn the old land rover ways of opening the bonnet before turning the key

Not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs but taking a look at a manual like this can be educational reminder for us all.

for any vehicle - not just a LR .... I know that with modern motor cars many owners never lift the bonnet

    for example ...

    3.02 REGULAR INSPECTION
A competent 4WD operator must have the right attitude towards servicing
and maintenance. Servicing includes the regular inspection of the vehicle,
and all ancillary equipment usually on a daily basis, for obvious faults and
the replenishment of consumables such as fuel, oil and water.
