    checks while sump is off

    Hi all,

Is there any checks I can perform on the lower end while the sump is out to ensure mechanical integrity for the future?

Perhaps clearances, correct torque on certain bolts etc?

    EDIT: Whoops - '95 300tdi with 340XXX on it.

Oil pump for wear, relief valve spring tension, big end and main bearing wear, crank thrust bearing wear, general look over as you said;eg bolts for tension. Depends on how far you want to go pulling thing apart.
If your oil pressure has been within specs and nothing unusual happening noise wise, I wouldn't bother. Check the crank end float though.

If it is a 300 tdi you won't find the oil pump in there. Definitely the bearings will be good to check, good time to get the sump all clean and sealed too.

    Cheers guys.

I dropped the sump today. It was easier to get the thing of than I was lead to believe which lead me to believe that it has been off in the past.

In most places there was only a thin amount of sealant - in others nothing...

Checked the clearances on the bearings etc and all was in spec.

I found a few bits of the old head gasket in the sump and a 1 tiny piece of metal... not sure about that...

Cleaned the surfaces up and put a nice amount of sealant on, left for 10 minutes, mounted and lighted screwed up, left for another 30 and then torqued to 25NM as per the manual in the correct order etc.

Question - Should I wait 24 hours before filling it due to the sealant (permatex black), or can I fill it now and wait 24 hours to run it, or can I run it tomorrow morning (16 hours)?
