    Accurate info on R380 transposability

    Hi all,

I am wanting to replace my defender, J suffix, r380 which sits behind a defender 300tdi
    with a
Discovery, J suffix, R380 which sits behind a discovery 300tdi.

I have been assured 100% beyond any doubt that the swap involves the replacement of the top gearstick remote assembly - by many sources.

I have also been assured 100% beyond any doubt that the internals are different, which requires stripping the box down to replace certain parts that requires specialist parts.

Can someone please confirm/deny which is correct? I seem to have hit a wall

I only know that a workshop in Sydney did it. Once. Never again was the feedback. The gear lever is in a different position as you'd know, how deep into the box that causes changes I don't know.

discovery box gearlever ends up in your defender seat box[ex mate did it and its horrible to drive/change gears], im no expert but when my 110 r380 was on the floor[after auto transplant] we looked at taking the top/selector off to swap over to disco box but it all looked to hard for me, sorry i cant help more....

You will need a complete strip down as the shift rails inside the trans are completely wrong, also.

    As Max said, never again.
