Series 3 maxidrive locking diff on a 300tdi

Hi was wondering if a maxidrive locking diff on a series 3 would fit a defender 130 300tdi? Could I I transplant the whole axle?

Unfortunately not. The series diff ratios are different to the defender. 4.7 compared to 3.5. The track is also different (narrower) and the series had leaf spring mounts. If it is the rear one you can't even swap the carrier over as it is a different offset to accommodate the larger pinion used in the 3.5 ratio.

And if one is a lwb and the other swb, the diffs are totally different.

But, if both are swb, then I think the carriers are interchangeable. (Someone will probably correct me - I am not very familiar with 90s as they are very rare in Australia.)

Couldn't you remove the maxi-drive diff from the housing, swap the crown wheels and modify the tdi axle housing to fit the actuator?

..and get new axles the right length for the tdi..

It is possible with buying some new parts, but probably cheaper to buy a new locker.

For a salisbury the "maxi-drive diff" is the modified OEM diff. These come in 2 types (same for Dana 60) - 4.1 and numerically lower and 4.3 and numerically higher. You could fit a spacer ring to a 3.54 centre but not the other way around.
The pics on this page show the dog splines in the carrier - on the same side as the crownwheel bolts to!

To swap a S111 Maxi-drive into a county you would need:
A new long axle (short side is the same length)
The 3.54 carrier modified by MR Auto.

To swap a S111 Maxi-drive into a county you would need:
The 3.54 carrier modified by MR Auto.
Either 2 new axle halfshafts or one new axle and a 15mm spacer ring for the short side drive flange.

The above assumes you are either using the OEM drive flanges or redrilling the series flanges to 5-bolt.
