    correct swivel hub service kit identification

    So just incase it hasn't been established I know very little about land rovers.
    Thanks to JDNSW for suggesting the rear brakes may need adjusting I did some reading, adjusted the rear breaks and they now feel 1000% from what they were.....for an old vehicle.
    Thanks to Tank for confirming both ends of the clutch hydraulics should be replaced at the same time. For now I have adjusted again with good results and will hope for the best but intend to replace the slave cylinder in the future. Should there be a heat shield between the exhaust and the slave cylinder ?
    Thanks to M.R. Automotive I am expecting a rear Maxi-drive indicator light to replace the one missing in my vehicle.


    Im looking to service the front swivel hubs. I believe there is an identification number on top of the diff to help when selecting the correct reco kit.
    but in the dimming light this afternoon I can't find it.

    dean, your vin will help, i am guessing 110 county, or 1992 to 1994 model 200 tdi by your mention of drum brake on the rear, but also can you post a pic of one of the swivel housings? they are easily recognisable. the reason is it is quite easy and not uncommon to swap in later 24 splne diff/ axle assemblies etc.

    Hi Justinc,
    Shes a 1985 county 110 V8 4spd. VIN = SALLDHMV1BA224055
    It came with front and rear maxi drives with front reinforcing at least on the outside. Bellow are links to pictures of the back of the swivel hub.
    Do you need me to take the wheel off for front pictures of the hub?

    Hi dean, The 'kit' you require is the one that uses upper Railco bushes, not upper taper roller bearings.

    1984/5 110 county and up to LA vin Defender, circa 1993/4 model year.

    Here's an example: Land Rover Parts - Swivel Kit - no ball - Defender to KA930455
    I've used their kits before and they have been pretty good.

    Make sure you get a kit that has some swivel pin shims in it (unless you've got a stock of them already).

    While you are at it, grab some new RTC3511 hub seals and clean/repack your wheel bearings (or convert them to oil lubed).
    I've found JC's method of using a drive flange to install the seals to the correct depth is the easiest way.

    Are swivel hub Gators/boots a worthwhile addition ? or will they just get torn in their first use off road.

    not required IMO. if they do tear, they may possibly fill up with abrasive material like sand etc and cause even more issues.

    Not generally a good idea, as they are almost impossible to guarantee they are watertight, so they will keep the ball wet and gritty - consequently short-lived! I agree with Justin.
