    Removing swivel balls 98 110

    Hey all,

Im just about to need to remove my swivel balls. I have a MD locker and axles installed. My CVs are custom RRC with MD stub shafts and anti-burst ring. I have the swivel housings, cvs etc all removed. The inner axle shafts have a solid spacer bush, some sort of snap ring and a bronze bush on it, all inside the swivel.

Im guessing I have to pull the inner shafts to remove the swivel balls?

Any specific procedure for this? Do I have to engage the locker? what about re-install?

Since there is so much interest in this thread, I thought some pics might be appropriate. The axle/cv combo is just a MD upgrade of the little 32cv to AEU2522 style/size, just using a RRC cv instead.

Here are the shafts ends that you see inside the swivel ball.

I think you have to lock the diff so that the locking dog is held in place on the centre when you remove the axle, otherwise you will need to remove the actuator when re-assembling to slide the dog onto the axle.

    Serg, what Guy said.

    There are 2 methods:

    Method 1:
    1. Lock front diff
    2. Remove brake caliper and tie up out of the way (or disconnect brake line)
    3. Disconnect drag link (and pitman arm)
    4. Undo the 7(?) bolts securing the swivel ball to the axle housing and remove entire assembly

This method (1) is quickest if you only need to do the balls and/or seals.

    Method 2:
    1. Lock front diff
    2. Remove brake caliper and tie up out of the way
    3. Disconnect drag link (and pitman arm)
    4. Remove hub flange
    5. Remove wheel bearing nut
    6. Remove hub assembly
    7. Remove stub axle
    8. Remove CV and halfshaft assembly
    9. Remove swivel outer housing
    10. Undo the 7(?) bolts securing the swivel ball to the axle housing and remove

I guess the pic of the inner shafts on my bench didn't give away the fact that I got them out . Also as in my first post, I had already removed everything else.

What you wouldn't know is my cvs do not pass through the swivel housing.

BTW, no idea why the pitman arm has to be removed

thanks for the replies though, I was beginning to think I should have asked about paint colour or wave etiquette instead

The shafts look like they were new and you were about to fit them, but still trying to get the old ones apart/out.
