Back in April 2010 when my new 90 was delivered (which happened to be the second one registered in WA after the "long absence") I actually had Land Rover enthusiast walk up to me and tell me that I've done a fantastic job on the restoration. Everybody thought it was an Extreme with a Puma bonnet.

Took quite a bit of convincing (looking in the cab and under the bonnet) for people to believe you could buy 90's in Australia again!

    Cheers,

    Lou

The most amiable or commendable comment I have had was "Which tip did you drag that out from, mate?"

6 months ago I had no idea you could still buy them new until I went to a Land Rover Dealer that sells Jeeps, to check out their wranglers in stock.
Long story short I left with a Defender and only had 1 older woman tell me how
great their Defender was and the travels they did in it after seeing me get out
of mine with my two daughters. She told me they drive a jackaroo now, and I didn't know what to think about that.

Mine is 10 years old but the most common comment I get is something along the lines of 'they don't make them like that anymore' ... to which I usually reply 'well ... they still do ... but not for long!'

The thing with a Defender is that no matter how old, or where in the world a person is from, the not only recognise a Land Rover but they know exactly what it is which is either a mark of brilliance or a sign that it's been on the market for a helluva long time. Or both!

I don't think that is quite accurate - the other day, getting a new tyre fitted, manager of the largest tyre company in Dubbo, looking up the pressure and wheel nut torque to tell his fitters "Hmm - Landrover - they're made by Toyota aren't they?".

I find most people think it is either a Toyota or a Jeep, but certainly the ones who do recognise it are quite surprised to find they are still made. Presumably a tribute to the lack of advertising of Defenders by JRA.

Must be a Dubbo thing I'm amazed anyone would think it a Toyota ... in my ownership nobody I've come across has thought it a Toyota or Jeep. Quite the contrary, they usually have a swag of reasons why LR's are crap - because their opinions are the only ones that matter
