Looking for a technically correct answer to the following .
I have a 97 300TDI 130 Defender , It sometimes struggles with heavily loaded hill starts , and some one told me that some models around this time had different gearing .
Is this correct ? and if so , where is the difference ?
I am also told that Defender and disco T'cases are different ratios .
Can anyone throw some light on this .
 Thanks...Dero

Unless there was something very specific about Australian 130's, all Defender R380 gearboxes and LT230 T'cases are the same and that late in the piece there was little or no modifications.

The Defenders and Discos have different ratios, but from your post this won't help you as the Disco is geared higher for better highway driving. Guys do this as a cheaper option to an overdrive as you can get a Disco R380 and LT230 T'case (well a whole disco with an R380 and LT230 T'case fitted) for very little in the UK.

You need to practice starting in low box and then changing into high box whilst rolling forward.

I often do this in the 110 (Td5). For me 2nd gear low at about 2000 rpm is when to take the foot off the gas, drop the clutch and move over into high before resuming drive. Take your time but not so slow a to let the revs drop too much, it will happily carry on in 2nd high without labouring.

 Jon
