    puma cutting out

Hi guys. Having some dramas with my 2008 defender. Was driving to Sydney yesterday and was loaded up with the daughters gear and the entire way it was cutting in and out. It wasn't just cutting out tho it was more violent than that. It was as though I was stabbing my foot on the brake.it was ok downhill or on the flat but as soon as I was going uphill or put the foot down it would cut on and off untill I eased off on the throttle. My daughter who was following in her car said she could see it stuttering and the was puffs of black smoke coming out each time it did it.even coming home today it was doing the same thing even tho the car was empty.it doesn't do it around town or going slow. It seems to happen when going over about 80kmh.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Regards
    Eric

How were your engine temps, rad, intercooler, etc clean?
    Fan OK?
They will do this once the engine coolant gets too hot.

Earth to JC,he is the guru on this.......

All of these in the normal operating temps. No warning lights and the temperature gauge right in the middle. I guess I could do a flush and clean as its probably been 2 years since I have changed the coolant

Sounds like an electrical issue or a total cut of power, perhaps to the fuel cut off or maybe a loose terminal on a solenoid..if it's temp related it should put the engine warning light on and log it as a coded error...similarly it should log a fault if it's dirty fuel, a blocked filter in a puma will often put the engine warning light on..maybe an immobilizer issue?

Bit more info might help with a diagnosis. Have you:

    Recently refuelled?

Recently disconnected the battery/had the car serviced/etc?

Recently driven in heavy rain/been mud plugging?

Recently cleaned the inside of the car (and dumped the TPS).

Sounds like a fuel/throttle thing to me - do you have anything to read faults with (such as a ScanGuage)?

I had this with my puma.
Changed egr valve (before I had it switched off) changed MAF
Changed intercooler hoses all made no difference.
    Mine is a 2007
The 2007-2009 suffered software issues, so I took mine and had a genuine land rover software upgrade and it solved the problem.
I had previously tried a software upgrade which was not from landrover, and while it improved the powerloss it did not solve it, yet the genuine software did solve it
    Hope this helps

was this a recent update from landrover? is there any way to see what version we are running? i have an 2007 that would probably benefit from this.

The update that fixed the powerloss problem was from landrover yes.
Without a diagnostics device I'm not sure you would know how to tell what version you are on. I've a nanocom but I have not set it up so don't know if it tells you what software you are on.
But the upgrade made such a difference. We had spent months chasing the powerloss round, changing everything. They were just about to swap out my turbo so it was starting to get pricey
Then a friend said the AA had the same problem with their transit vans which was solved by the upgrade.
I personally think that getting the upgrade just in case is a great idea although I don't know how much land rover hammer your wallets there or the exchange rate.

Yes it recently has has a service, clean, fuel and mudding. This has been a random issue over the last 12 months tho but just the odd stutter and then run fine again for weeks or months. Just driving up and down the freeway over the weekend it was very constant, very annoying and very noticeable. The check engine light came on last week and during the service (at utra tune as the nearest dealer is 70km away) they put their code reader on it and it said egr fault. They cleared that but it didn't come on at all over the weekend. There is no problems around town, in the city or on a windy road. Just seems to be on the open highway. Sounds like a software update could be in order.
