Thread: 2.4L Defender

Me thinks the only problem that will be certain will be a clutch. Which I think is a $2000 job if LR do it. If the diff is noisy, and the drive line clunks, take it to Diff Lapping on the Northside and have it reset to reduce play. Guessing 2 to $400.
The diff is not of the greatest design, but will also do the job for most. They are not a guaranteed failing point. The EGR valve will also go at some point. LR wanted $800 to fix. A engine re map for $800 will remove that part of the engine management and also make it more drivable and responsive. I'd imaging that would be the 3 biggies in my book. All the rest can happen to any second hand car.

ps. The front diff can be observed through the fill hole. 4 pin "Good" came out 3/4 through 2010 I think. I have a "from" model number somewhere. 2 pin are the ones not so good. A new 4 pin centre is around $450 + fitting. Maybe another 2 o $300.

I have got to agree a remap makes the most dramatic change, it becomes much more drivable! Regarding the diffs, I have never had a problem, however I am also aware of shall I say their engineering short comings. To this I would say ash crofts have the answer, they can supply to really whatever level and beyond what you would require. this is what I intend to do as I now come out of warranty.

The 2.4's had a run of bad clutches. Well not bad, they still worked, just noisy from a spring breaking. It will rattle when idling if the spring has gone. LR would replace them but with the same thing so it seemed. I believe they have a newer version nowadays, could be what's in the 2.2's. My last one is definitely softer than the first. Don't get excited it's still heavy though. It also has more pick up travel but I have gotten aquatinted with that.

If the clutch does need replacing, consider doing the slave cylinder as well. Some bright spark positioned it in the bell housing. I think it's a $400 part which leaves you walking funny, but a whole lot cheaper and easier to do when the thing is apart.

It still may be possible, to argue with LR the clutch is there responsibility. But that would depend on your gall, patience, delivery and so on. Easier to negotiate the buy price of the vehicle down I'd say.

Hi, Just to provide some input, I purchased a 2010 7 seater Defender from a dealer (not LR) in April this year for $39,000. It had done 23,000km and other than a scuffed drivers seat box is in excellent cond. and had been traded on a VW Amarok. It is Keswick green with white roof fitted with side steps and ARB bulbar. It had been serviced once by Lyntons Gold Coast. I gave it a oil and filter change, checked all levels, changed the front diff oil because it was discoloured(since found out from hub lubricant and not a problem at this stage.) It now has 31,000. km with no problems and probably worth about the same money. It is used on the road with no serious offroad work yet.

Thank you FlyWheel It's good to hear i guess we come on hear to learn but end up reading lots of horror stories i'm sure in reality it's prob not as bad as it all seems it's just hard to workout gamble on used or buy new
