    Thomas winch - worth rebuilding

I've got a 8000kg electric Thomas winch just pulled off the front of my new 1996 130, that needs some attention, broken electrical connections, corrosion, general rebuild, clean up and stuff. My question is, basically is it worth doing the repairs and rebuild, or am I better off to scrap it and buy a new winch? Trying to take into considation the mounting and electrics to replace as well. Any ideas appreciated.
    Cheers

Worth doing if you have the time, bloody good winch but if you don't have the time, I do. So if you decide to scrap it you can put it in my bin

Cheers Isuzuscott, if someone else is prepared to have it in their scrap bin, then I'm prepared to invest the time rebuilding (for the moment anyway)
But I will keep your kind offer in the back of my mind as I swear and curse and bash knuckles.

I've had a few of these winches, I believe to be the best on the market, I'd rebuild it if I was you, take the motor to a good auto sparkie, he will rebuild it, the gearbox will just need bearings and bushes, If you decide to bin it, I'll take it off you...Good Luck....Joe

I have one of these on my 130 as well. It will drag the 130 up a hill when beached on the chassis and rear diff with a single line pull, that's good enough for me. And I'd rather stall the winch than break it or the cable anyway. If I need more there's always the snatch block. All solid quality inside, made before the explosion of cheap asian stuff onto the market. Only modification is that mine uses a one piece solenoid pack which has worked a treat. There's a thread in the recovery section that tells you how to make it work.

My guess is that apart from the electric motor there will probably be little that needs rebuilding - probably a couple of seals.

    Which thread?
I put "solenoid pack" in and 5 threads came up. I havnt the time to go through all of them. I have just bought a one piece pack off ebay, Trex or something and of the 4 terminals, none have markings as to what they are for

I assume that if yours is like mine it has only 2 terminals on the actual winch motor? Mine has Thomas on the comtroller and thomas on the paperwork but Ramsay on the badges on the winch. The thread I'm referring to is entitled "Old Ramsay Winch Overhaul" and is in the recovery section. Hope this helps.
