My 2012 D90 has had a slight squeal for a little while now when first touching the brakes. After reading this thread I thought to check the pads out so removed both rear wheels to find absolutely tons of brake pad left on both sides.

Tomorrow I hope to remove the front wheels and check the pads at that end. (It took me a while for the rears because while I had the wheels off I thoroughly cleaned the insides and also the calipers and stuff).

My D90 is just shy of 30k and has done a few dirt roads and a bit over 5k of towing a fully enclosed trailer.

The rear pads will wear a lot quicker than the front especially if you tow or carry heavy loads in the rear. My 2009 Puma is sitting at 32,000 miles and is on its 3rd set of rears as I tow a lot. I replaced the rear calliper pistons to stainless steel last time as the corrosion on the OEM pistons would not allow the piston to seat far enough into the calliper to allow fitting of the new oem pads. I live in Scotland were the local councils put tons of salt on the roads every winter that increases the corrosion rate of the pistons.
