One of the most depressing views I've seen in a while.
Decided to give Molly ('96 300Tdi 130) a run, packed up the rods the surf boards, the fridge, the sandcastle equipment, even put the kids in and headed out to Lucky Bay. Didn't even make it the National Park gate.
Cruising along in 5th at about 90km/h when all of a sudden lost all drive. Free wheeled to the side, gave it a shake, all gears can be selected, locked the diff, got out, kicked it, nothing...
Text wife with some really nice language, and she sends out the Pootrol.
Three good things in this though,
I had mobile reception
It's my Pootrol as well
And I already have a new gearbox, transfer box, clutch and fork sitting at the mechanics.
But it's still a depressing view. Even worse when it's upside down somehow...
Sorry to hear, mainshaft?

Haven't really looked into it much, took the easy option of tow it home because of the kids, parked it up on the front lawn, and am ready for a beer.
Will look into a bit when I get some time, and the mechanic gets back from holidays and I can get at all my parts.
Cheers

I take it that means the handbrake doesn't hold now?

						Just checked...
No, the handbrake holds it, just no drive in any gears, low, high, diff locked and unlocked.

As long as the rear end is ok and both wheels are on the ground the handbrake should hold.
If you have no drive in any gear then the main shaft splines and transfer case input gear is where I would be looking via the plate on the back of the transfer case. By 96 they may have just had the drilled transfer case input gear sorted. My MY94 suffered from the spline wear problem, before that backlash was noticeable in the drive train.

As an update to this, I now have the shiny new bits sitting there ready to go in. Admittedly as in another post, found some other small issues.

Now, I'll be honest, I don't know a lot about gearboxes, but I'm pretty sure this was the issue.
Cheers
