Thread: Rear wheel arch liner

Well I've been to the local stealer and put my money down to join the puma defender club

Whilst I was looking at the demo in the showroom, I was disappointed (but not entirely surprised) to see that, just like my old series 3 Lightweight, there is no liner in the rear wheel arch. Not even as much as a sprayed on coating of goo either.

With my Lightweight, years of muck, mud and goodness knows what else in all the nooks and crannies had turned much of the bodywork to a white crumbly mess. So when I rebuilt it, as well as a good coating of waxoyl, I made myself a rubber wheel arch liner to keep the worst of the crap out (also stopped the annoying 'ping' noise of stone chips!). Not the best image, but you get the idea.

I plan to do something similar to the Defender, along with a few other sound insulating mods, and I was wondering if anyone had bothered to make something like this - I've searched a bit on here and found the odd reference to using a cut-out barrel, but that's about it.

Fitted the other rear side inner guard liner today, I've attached some pics which should help explain things. I replaced the 6mm diameter plastic clips which hold on the flared arch with M6 stainless domed headed screws as the clips would not be long enough. Theres also a bit more load on them as the liner is a true radius and the wheel arch outer shape is flat along the top edge.
Had to cut approximately 150mm off the width of the liner using an electric jigsaw which cuts it easily.
So with some pushing & pulling it looks ok, and is so much quieter!.
