    Split intercooler hose - 2012 110

It was a beautiful day on Monday, cruizing along at 60-ish in light traffic.
Then a slight whistling noise that increases with accelerator pedal pressure. Curious it doesn't increase with revs, just pressure.
Then a complete loss of power. And I mean COMPLETE - Now she struggels to get to 50km/h on flat ground. I thought it had gone into 'limp mode'.

The very helpful folk at Romsey found a split in the inlet hose between the intercooler and the inlet manifold. I had it booked in for a service on Friday, so they will replace the hose then as well.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is it common? Do I need to carry spares on long trips? Are silicone hoses really better?

    Thanks,
    John.

I think most people with a 2012 model Defender have had hose issues. I have had both a intercooler hose and radiator hose split. The intercooler hose caused me to go into limp mode on a busy freeway and the radiator hose spilled coolant everywhere. Both times it ended up getting tow trucked to the dealer... I will be buying silicone hoses as spares when i get the money.

I had my intercooler hose split (2012 130). It wasn't rubbing on anything - it just split. I'm told there have been three versions of that hose. Mine was replaced with the latest version which makes it a lot more steel pipe and less rubber hose.

Yup, I have had 3 go so far, '12 130 HCPU. Towed all 3 times as no one has spare hoses not even the dealerships. I am definitely considering silicone hoses.

I'd just fit silicone hoses and be done with it - it's a long tow out of the middle of the Simpson...

I always had intentions of fitting silicone hoses asap when I bought mine, but didnt get around to it, and sure enough it decided to split on the way to a long weekend trip. Never been so ****ed at myself. Instead of leaving early that morning, we ended up leaving later that afternoon and not in the defender.

Dont wait for them to split, I would change them as soon as you buy it.

I've been looking since this thread started at some silicone hoses but am not sure which ones are correct. Could someone please clarify for me.

These are the ones i looked at,

I still don't get it. What's causing them to split? The split on mine was right up alongside the hose clamp at the intercooler end of the hose. Is that consistent with other folks' experiences? Nothing was rubbing on it. If we replace that hose with a silicone one, are we guaranteed the same thing won't happen, and why?

We've not had any probs on our MY13 and the guy at MLR service centre told us it has been fixed in the later models, but I did read here about some folks having it on these regardless, so it's a bit of a lottery. Just keep checking 'em and carry some rescue tape... once the warranty is done I'll probably stump up for silicone I guess, or is it worth doing sooner? Not sure on the implications if still under warranty.
