    TD5 performance - Is something wrong...

    We took our new (to us) Cub Camper for a long trip last weekend. My TD5 defender struggled with towing. The camper weighs about 1000kg fully loaded so it's not huge. It's also not overly bulky. But I found it difficult to get past 100k's on the flat, and maintain 100k's on slight hills. Basically foot was flat to the floor in 4th and 5th the whole way on the freeway. This was along the Western Freeway towards Ballarat.

    I also managed to get to 99C on the TM2 CHT gauge for the first time up an long slight incline at 100kmh. I have noticed it runs 2 degrees hotter when towing - but I assume that's within tolerance.

    It's a 2003 TD5 with 230,000 on the clock. Stock condition - with no mods. I don't think Power output has suddenly dropped off, it's more that I noticed the issue for the first time this weekend.

    So is there an issue, what should I expect from a TD5 Defender towing 1 ton?

    I was thinking about having the Cat downpipe removed and swapped for a straight through on the assumption it's probably clogged by now. Also planning on getting rid of the EGR and perhaps getting the Intercooler flushed.

    Any other suggestions on things to look at?

    Judging by my 130 TD5 at 110,000 kilometres I would say yours is fine. I towed a heavy trailer for about 800 kilometres. I was cruising at 100 KPH but as I recall, there wasn't much left, and hills did pull it up a bit. The trailer weighed about 1500 kilos but had little wind drag.

    Just a remap and your away! As I posted the other week, we towed a camper behind our 110 Td5 and it went awesome. I have also removed EGR but I don't think that has anything to do with it. Talking with my local exhaust centre(whom is rather experienced in this area) & he said just replace the mufflers with straight through ones. I will be doing exhaust rearrangement in next couple months. But as I said remap is the go.

    Check the turbo waste gate modulator. There are many similar threads on this forum.

    I agree. I added an allisport intercooler and it pulls really well.
    You have to watch your egt's though.
    I like mine to not exceed 550 when towing. So if that means slowing down, I do.

    I've towed my camper when it was around 33 outside and TM2 didn't get over 86. So she is running pretty sweet ATM.
