Question Whats the story behind this?

    • Engine had recently had a new complete head installed with new gaskets.
    • head gasket failed again recently - exhaust/bubbles blowing through coolant expansion tank in dramatic fashion.

    300tdi

This was installed by a mechanic to the spec in the manual - clearances done to the manual etc...

Oil pressure was fine in the vehicle - around 10psi - and the pads on the rockers are smooth.

    Is that a lash cap?

I remember once talking to a mechanic mate who fixed up a Tdi. The customer supplied cheap parts and he had the same drama. Lash caps wore through

It's stupid seeing as genuine ones are quite cheap

The genuine ones are the problem! others will chime in about "manley"[i think] caps that last longer, i carry spare caps in my car just in case-and yes i have used them....

What situation would you have a need to use such a spare? Genuinely curious as i might add them to my parts stash

Not sure what brand gear was used on the rebuild - other than it was an AMC head...

7 of the caps were worn through, 1 was pitted and flattened and the other 2 seemed normal but with a large amount of wear over a new cap...

If its just crap parts, what sort of problems will I be facing further down into the engine?

I got 60,000ks out of my last set[set at 8thou from memory], check and reset gaps at 20,000k intervals, this engine has a filter and oil change every 5000 and is now 70,000ks old, i can guarantee that when i hear a loose tappet noise it will be a lash cap, i treat them as disposable, this is just my opinion--but i would rather a soft lash cap wear through than a harder cap hammer and break a valve stem,

10 psi is low for the oil pressure. Check the balls and the cups on the rods.

Id want to be seeing 15 at hot low idle and upto about 45psi at full RPMs
