Tappets noisy after timing belt change

    Hi everyone,
just trying to establish my next move. I changed the timing belt (complete kit) on my 300tdi and thought I had success. Drives fine, but noticed tinging noise.
listened closer and I am pretty sure the tappets are hitting.

Now I have not adjusted the tappets but they were fine prior to changing the timing belt. I am pretty sure I set the timing all correctly but this may not be the case.

My question is - do I adjust the tappets or do I check the timing? Is it normal to have to adjust the tappets after doing a timing belt? Also - whats the potential damage if I continue to drive.....not sure if I can get it done before having to go to work tomorrow!

    Thanks

pull the rocker shaft off and check the faces on the rocker arms for wear and the valve lash caps, if all is good then reinstall and set your your tappets.

Check VERY carefully the camshaft timing mark is lined up. I have heard noises from a Tdi that were slightly heavier than tappet rattle, turned out to be valves kissing pistons.
May also be excessively advanced timing, so check the overall setting too.

Vehicle had been like this for many thousands of km, hadn't suffered any ill effects and it actually went sooo much better after the cambelt was fitted correctly

    Good 'ole Tdi...
