I recommend throwing in shock bushes, full set F&R. I carried a full set of bushes for RA, trailing arms, shocks, steering (+ filters, belts and fluids). I had to call on the rear axle shock bushes on the trip. Wore out 2 sets of OEM. I had to go polybush (not for a defender) when the replacement set wore out. If they wear and start moving around the wear is exponential. You won't find defender shock bushes north of Townsville for love nor money.

Buy several rolls of rescue tape, good if you spring a leak in a radiator hose.

My show stopper was a split in the radiator hose at a juncture of a secondary hose. 5 days in Townsville waiting for the hose to fly in from LRA in Melb. Don't break down on a Thursday or Friday. Few mechanics open weekends, even in Townsville the LR dealership workshop is closed. Overnight by Australia Post does not apply to regional towns and Townsville is regional. Going Platinum only means you get parcel insurance and a little more love with tracking but no faster. If you need parts cough up for a national courier (TNT, Toll etc) but ask if is guaranteed overnight before you pay the premium service.

If you break down in or near Bamaga, Mark in Seisa is a good mechanic and nice fella.

final word, buy NRMA premium care. I had 2 breakdowns on the trip each requiring extended stays in Bamaga and Townsville. NRMA premium care paid for the accom while stranded, towing and a flight for my wife to fly from Bamaga to Cairns because the breakdown was going to make her late to return to work (I picked up the cost from Cairns to Sydney). I estimate about $3,000 in payments made by NRMA. I over index on NRMA's call out stats.

    Red face

Should have also added that carrying new spares in case older parts break is bad practice - change anything remotely questionable out at home and take the worn ones with you.

Once you're doing remote trips the idea of standard maintenance schedules becomes useless - over maintain it and accept the cost as the price you pay for reliability under arduous conditions.

How many k's on average roads before a brand new Defenders suspension warrants the carrying of spares? 0 , 10,000 50,000 ?

Im guessing the following would be a comprehensive kit, for about $300 AUD, but then what special tools would you need by the side of the road ?
And i am using the following by way of example:

Britpart Yellow Defender Polyurethane Bush Kit for Defender 02' on
    Part Number: DC7008

    £87.37 inc. VAT ( £72.81 ex. VAT )

    DESCRIPTION
    PAYMENT
    DELIVERY
Defender 02 onwards chassis number 2A626646 onwards.

This brand new range of Britpart polybushes are manufactured using the latest Vulkollan™ polyurethane technology.

They are machined to exact tolerances once cast, to produce the highest quality finish available.

This compound produces similar ride characteristics to the standard rubber bushes, but also offers improved articulation, vibration damping and lasts longer.

This kit includes shock absorber and A-frame bushes.

    Kit consists of
4x NTC6860PY Front Radius Arm Bushes
4x NRC4514PY Front Radius Arm Bush
    2x RBX101340PY Panhard Rod Bush
2x NTC1772PY Rear Trailling Arm Bush
2x NRC7491PY Rear Trailing Arm Bush
    2x NTC1773PY Rear A Frame Bush
2x NRC5593PY Rear Shock Absorber Top Bush
    12x 552818PY Shock Absorber Bush
By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.
    apologies to Socrates

I was at OL today mate. They have them in the bins but they are at the bottom of the bin and the bin is choko full of metal parts. It was near impossible to get them out without being charged an hourly rate for them to get to them.

    Sorry

You know if they're open this Sat? I could try and get them while I'm in picking up a few things.

The 2.2 is a completely different motor to the 2.4. Terrafirma have all but intercooler hoses which are starting to prove unreliable. Best replaced with silicon but unfortunately not available except by custom order for about$400 the set. Heater hoses are also failing due to rubbing, yours may have been corrected. We just took moldable tape that's set with a UV torch on a Simpson desert trip. Fortunately didn't need anything. My 110 has since been back to a daler twice on a tow truck since then when hoses have failed.
