    Stuck in 1st

    G'day team. I was wondering if anyone has had the following problem.


    2009 Defender 130
    I stopped at the shops on the way home from work and when I got back into the car the gear box seemed to be stuck in 1st gear. The clutch was travelling well and the gear stick was floating around in neutral but the gear would not change out of 1st or select any other gear.


    I now have it on a truck en route to the dealership I bought it from so here's hoping it's under warranty. I only bought the car 8 months ago and only has 6OK on the clock.


    Any ideas what the issue might be?

    I remember this was a common known fault with the Early Puma's. I also recall a Dealer note covering this - there were a few threads here covering this - Stuck in 1st was one of them

    Not sure that it actually helps, but there is a TSB on this:

    Subject/Concern: Transmission Stuck in Gear, Selector Shaft Detents Now Available

    Models: Defender (LD) 2.4 Puma Diesel 2.4 Puma Diesel VIN-range: 7A732615 Onwards

    Markets: All
    Section: 308-03

    Summary: This Technical Bulletin is to advise that the transmission selector shaft detents are now available as a serviceable part. Therefore it is no longer necessary to replace the complete transmission assembly for concerns related to the transmission selector shaft detents (transmission stuck in gear).

    Should it become necessary to replace the transmission selector shaft detents, refer to the new procedure detailed in Global Technical Reference GTR Workshop Manual, section 308-03.

    Hi,

    It's an easy 20 min fix, don't let the dealer charge you if they won't cover it under warranty,

    Remove the 10mm dia vertical detent in the rear housing,

    Poke a small screw driver in and flick the detent rail into neutral, I can't remember which way but it will only move one way,

    Then fit the new type detent which has a stronger spring to stop it happening again,

    SO here's the issue:




    "We have removed the gearbox, dis-assembled and found the interlock retainer spring to be the issue, allowing the dowels to move / fall out and There fore lock into a gear, this being 1st gear."


    Bye Bye $3500.

    That's the same issue but dressed up with BS !

    That was a waste of $3500 !

    Well worth following up. If the dealer's mechanics don't have the knowledge to fix something easily, why should you have to pay?

    Ashcroft have a lot more knowledge about transmissions than the average dealer mechanic.
