    Puma gearbox oil

I spent several hours this week researching what oil to put in the engine on the 130, hoping I can avoid the same with regard to the gearbox oil. Is the Castrol BOT 130 M oil readily available in consumer quantities? Or is there a suitable alternative?

MR auto(LR independents) use Valvoline Syngear 75/90 fully synthetic.

But even though the BOT stuff is expensive,it is peace of mind.

I trolled through google on it as well, and found the Puma G/box is also used in Mustangs, they use a special Ford spec 75/90 but no one seemed to know what it actually is.

Thanks guys, I will see which of those options I can obtain, not too worried about price as it is not a frequent expense.

Just buy the BOT, you only need 2.4 litres, and at 60,000km intervals and approx $70/litre (retail dealer price) it constitutes way less any trans issues that you may have in the future.......

Hi Serge, yes to 60,000km in most cases. The BOT oil is very high quality, and developed especially for these transmissions.

I would question leaving it in there for 40,000km if towing though. The Puma Defender is capable of towing big loads with ease, however the trans and drivetrain work hard. I change the transfer oils in these at 20,000km if working hard, and always use a synthetic 75w90, this is my preferred;Penrite Oil - A Better Class Of Oil

You only need 2.2 litres, unless you are able to completely drain the gearbox of its current fluid.

If you overfill, the cabin interior will get very hot. My indie overfilled at the last service and now there is a lot more heat by my left leg.

Brings me back to the other part of my original query; is the BOT 130M readily availabe in, say, 4L containers? Any suggestions of what retail outlets to start looking?

sorry, so far dealer only, per 1 litre bottle. iirc a few of the aftermarket suppliers can get it in, but still not cheap. eventually it will become available i would say.
