gear selection problems - 300TDi Defender

    Hi All,

The thing was in reverse and on changing gear out of reverse it got stuck in no gear - half reverse, as the reverse idler was crunching. The gear change lever was rock solid. So I removed the top gear lever housing and forced the gear selector rod a bit. This gave me all gears but no 5th. Then on limping home it would sometimes get stuck again and i had to be more forceful. Even when I could select the gears that were available the selection was very notchy and unsmooth.

Now its parked and again have all gears but 5th.

I am assuming the selection mechanism has a problem. So am getting ready to remove the gearbox.

Anyone had this before? Any ideas? Advice?

    bye all - george

Before you remove the whole gearbox, check the mechanism on top of the gearbox as that can sometimes shift, causing problems.

Get it into neutral, whip the top off the selectors again and make sure the grub screw on the gearstick socket hasn't come loose.

Maybe its leaving the selector behind and not cleanly disengaging, although this should have a very sloppy gearstick feel.

The layshaft extension on the R380 is a known weak-point; if it shears then you'll struggle to select 5th or reverse. If that's the fault then it's arebuild....

Mine had the selector shaft yoke pin fall out somehow? The gear lever got stuck and after a little wobble of the lever it freed up but no 5th or reverse But I read it as you still have reverse? Maybe a broken selector fork?
    Any way good luck PJ.
