Again 1 country 7 different laws, a crab bar in Nsw only needs to be fitted by an approved person, so 390, in Nsw the bolts in the seat back have to be engineered so 1k as they have an eng who knows what their doing. Every other state is different. In the car child seat bolt thread there are 110's with the bolt points on the cargo barrier that got a mod plate in Qld , but that's a different state.:D
As has been said check vic current laws and find a fitter with some idea or past experience with defenders.

Agreed, however be aware not all places are willing / able to provide a certified seat back install.

An alternative is to build a bar overhead that bolts to the roof rails (internal part of gutter). Bent up to follow roof shape. My cousin has this. We built it and got it certified (qld). Adds a good amount of strength to the roof. Not my ideal method but suits him.

In the interest of thread closure, I contacted, and heard back from CompTune Engineering in Sydney. Their seat back CRA points cost just under a grand. And can only be installed and certified in house. I find the price reasonable but am likely unable to commit to travelling from Melbourne to have them installed.

Hopefully this thread may help others in the Sydney area who are looking for CRA's.

Why can't the child restraint be fitted to the seat belt fixing point on the floor , I don't have any young children so this is something I have never had to address , My point is if there rated of an adult , then surly they would also be for a child !!..

There are specific angles and ranges of where the clip is allowed. On the floor is not in this range. It allows for damage to main seat. If your top strap connects to the lower point and the main seat goes you have zero triangulation. Would not like to be in that big a crash but hey...

I've spent a fair amount of time researching this subject and came up with some surprising results.

According to one source in Sydney, the anchor on the rear of the seat is not a legal nor appropriate mod for the use of anchoring a child seat. The only two approved methods are the crab bar and the more dreaded floor mounted post which takes up even more room. I was told that the commercial nature of the Defender means that the rear seats are not load rated for a child seat with the expected vertical/downwards loads experienced in a collision.

Price-wise, I was quoted a plethora of different figures that ranged from $750 to over $2500 for a crab bar fitment. Whatever you elect to do, make sure you shop around as you will save yourself some money in the end.

I'd say the "source " saying that is pulling the wool;). I personally have the crab bar and it was under $400 three years ago approved fitting in a 02 def110 wagon. There was another "supplier" who wanted to fit the floor anchor posts at more Han twice that and told me a similar line to yours. I've seem the seat back mount done in the puma by comptune and it looked factory, like my old 2 playdough fridges, 98 and 04 . I've looked at getting a puma and from what I can find out the seat back is the best option as the crab bar needs an a frame to take it to the correct height and the floor post eats your load area.
