130 axle into 110 ABS
Hi all.
I'm looking for some advise from the gallery! Can anyone tell me if I can put a 130 Salisbury rear axle into my 110. My 110 has ABS/TC.
I want to take advantage of the thicker axle tubes of the 130.
My car is a 99MY and the axle I have is a 98MY. The 130 didn't have ABS as far as I know.
Any help greatly appreciated, as usual.
Cheers
Nino.

Does nobody know someone who might know something?
Please, don't make me strip the rear hubs just to find it can't be done!
Cheers,

I would suggest it probably isnt straight forward. ABS/TC requires wheel speed sensors. So you would need the sensor housings off your 110 axle - if that can be done?
No idea really. Never looked that closely at the brakes on a ABS/TC equipped defender.
Is it really necessary though? Ive had enourmous loads in both my sals equipped single cabs (isuzu stage 1 109 and 200tdi 110) over unfavourable terrain and cant say theyve ever looked like bending/breaking/failing.

Yes you can, however, You require stubs with the ABS sensor hole in the flange, rotors from an ABS model to incorporate the reluctor and a modification to the mounting flange for the stub on the diff housing. ( a hole drilled)
Your 110 ABS stubs, hubs, rotors etc should bolt straight up to the 130 housing, however, you will still need to drill a hole in the mounting flange for the sensor.
pics here should help explain what I mean.

This is a non ABS stub.

This is an ABS stub.

Ok. That's brilliant. Do I need to buy a caliper mount bracket and will it except the 110 caliper and line up with ABS reluctor and brake rotor. What does the ABS sensor fit into? It looks like one end of the 110 axle has a bracket welded on. The pictures in the parts manual aren't very clear and I don't want to strip the car only to find it can't be done or the car will be off the road for months while I source parts.
Cheers for your help. I'm feeling better about my purchase.

Hubs, rotors, stubs, Caliper Brackets, Calipers and back plates all bolt on to the 130 housing.
The mod for the Sensor will become obvious when the 110 gear is fitted up.
Your existing 110 seals is the best template.
