    Trailer direction indicator warning light

My 2002 defender 110 has a trailer direction indicator indicator light on the dash. Can anyone tell me how this feature detects a blown trailer globe? I suspect a voltage change dependant on change of resistance , however how does it know the trailer is connected?
    cheers Obi
