Thread: Dodgy Starter Motor

It should be easy to recon with a kit for the solenoid. What engine is it?

I did mine on my td5 with a denso kit for about $40 and it can be done without taking the starter off although it is easier to remove it.

If it's a td5 also check the condition of you fuel pressure regulator as when the get tired the leak onto the starter accelerating their deterioration.

Depending on the age of your starter motor, it could be that the brushes need replacing - I did mine a while ago, the hardest part was finding somewhere that sells the right brushes - I ended up getting ones that were a little big and filed them down to size - cost all of $16 - gave the motor a good clean out and it has been fine since. Plenty of videos on you tube showing how to do it.

Ashdown Ingram usually have a good range of brushes etc when I've had to chase them in the past.

Wiggle that wire first, the one that goes between the starter solenoid and the key switch.

It is a common fault now to have the crimped wire come loose in the splade connector, where the wire fits onto the lug on the starter motor solenoid.

Failing that, pull the starter and go for a new set of brushes.

If it is the original genuine Bosch, remove it and give it a clean. I just recently did this and only had to replace the solenoid. I just went to an auto electrician friend and he had one on the self.
