Tdi door hinge upgrade to td5 type
Hi all, time for new hinges for my tdi's front doors - bolts as well.
I can scrounge a decient set of hinges of a series3 I got lying around (correct type with mirror holes) but will need to replace the bolts as I reckon I'll be using a drill to remove the old ones. Just wondering if it's worth spending the dollars for a set of td5 type hinges, bolts and gaskets or just getting a set of early type bolts and gaskets and using the hinges I already got.
Anyone done this, is it worth my extra$ ?

I haven't noticed a difference - how are the td5 ones different.

There's a couple of little shims/spacers on the pin, preventing the metal to metal rubbing of the to two hinge parts post '98made , as well as different bolts and gaskets. They look a little chunkier and more rounded on close inspection as well.
I only just found this out while looking for new bolt set.

The TD5 ones are also electroplated, which means they don't rust quite so quickly.
When I replaced mine ('97 Tdi) I used the Tdi ones again - they were in stock while the TD5 ones weren't. In reality I think the difference between them is minimal; what kills the hinges is that the pin wears away - the TD5 hinges don't seem to address that problem. Whatever you use, make sure they're packed with grease and you'll be set.
