    Defender Disc Replacement

    How often should one be replacing disc pads on my 2.2 Puma.
    Now i know some will say when they are worn out!
    But is there a K's zone that these things should last.

    Replaced my pads and discs on my 2010 2.4 Puma at 90,000km.

    Does that help?

    After market were a lot cheaper.

    I guess it's just like asking how long is a piece of string....
    If you use your brakes all the time, say in a city, then you would wear the pads out quicker than say a country driver that does long kilometres and mainly uses engine braking to slow down.

    A 2.2 puma engined TDCi doesn't have the best engine braking, so I rely more on the brakes to slow down rather than using engine braking.
    My rear pads on my 2013 model 90 are pretty well worn compared to my front pads (so far only 18000klms).
    But I do a lot of mainly city driving, start stop, emergency braking to avoid bloody taxis and all that sort of stuff.

    How true!

    It reminds me of my old mate's ex wife. I was visiting them interstate, about 30 or so years ago, just when asbestos free pads were coming in. They had a Saab 90, & had been complaining because they only got 5000K's (!!) out of a set of front pads. The dealer said: "the new pads don't last as well as the old asbestos ones". They grudgingly accepted this, but I was still surprised at the poor pad life.

    Then the wife gave me a lift to the airport to come home, & I immediately realized why they only got 5000K's.

    She only had 2 speeds - flat out & emergency stop!

    I thought it may be a touch difficult for some!
    I understand if one rides the brakes their pads will not last very long, but that would then be something for me to work out via K's traveled.

    If a bunch of members said they got 50000K's out of a set of pads then i would be right to believe i would get something like that from mine.

    I have just had my disc pads replaced after 85000K's which from the small amount of people that have responded i am not one that rides the brakes!

    The real issue i have with the pad replacement is that on the front discs, one side of the disc the pad was 6 mm the other side was down to the metal.
    the rear was the same except we had 7 mm to nothing.

    FYI the pads start with 11 mm.

    First i was told by my service man that this is how the Defender brake system works (yeah right!) 1 pad wears more than the other, ill accept that, but not 11 mm on one side & 4 mm on the other, a couple of mm difference I will accept.
    The real reason is the slides all-round had ceased & the automotive technician had not checked for all of my Land Rover services, until it was picked up during fitting of new tyres. The tyre shop were not going to let my truck out of their shop as my well serviced 90! Was now unroadworthy (RTA approved centre).

    My Land Rover service outlet had clearly not done its job AND charged me for the joy of giving them my 90, to rub salt into my wound they again charged me for the parts only, making me feel that it was part my fault that we are at this problem. I only drive the truck they do the servicing & checking, total incompetence & down right rude to charge me for their failures!

    The other thing that is now playing on my mind is what else did they fail to inspect, repair correctly on my truck!

    My last service was 80000K's a big service (their words) cost me over $1200 only 3 weeks ago, last 2 service sheet states brakes inspected & all good but new tyres required (got them).

    My pride & joy will now be going to Ricks in Nerang were the services i pay for i will be getting.

    Not Happy with Gold Coast Land Rover. I would like to NOT recommend them to any Land Rover owner.

    David, my 2011 2.4 went through pads very similar in wear fashion to yours. I cant really remember, but I think about 45-50K (?) I thought this to be a very fast wear rate, but having said that, I do alot of city driving.
    My rears wore the worst, and very unevenly on one side, down to bare metal one side of the disk, and I would guess not even half way on the other side of the disk, left hand wheel. The other side of the car was similar in wear, but nowhere near to the same extent.

    I used aftermarket pads, which took ages to bed in, and still dont pull me up like the originals did.
    Next time I will be replacing both pads and disks, and more than likely go with the original pads.

    My 2000 td5 had done 216,000 k's when I sold it. The pads and discs were original and passed a roadworthy in Vic. No city driving and light on the peddle as I probably drove it like a truck and not braking hard into corners and anticipating traffic lights and using a bit of forward plaaning into the road ahead. Not sure how the 2.2 will go.
