Thoughts on the OME long travel kits for a 130

Hi all, having ventured back to landrovers after playing with Jeeps for the last 15 year.. I just picked up a 2000 model 130 for a family trip to the cape

I'm weighing up which kit and have been offered a OME long travel for a good price... how does it compare to something like the terrafima equivalant.

I'll be running a canopy with a roof top tent and already have a steel bullbar with my highmount fitted

would also like to run 285/75/16 as thats what the other cars we will be travelling with will be running ( saves on carring multiple spares )

    Cheers in advance

    Rob

Don't know suspension kit but if your looking at 285's you will need 16x8 and either zero or -25mm offsets, standard landys are either +20 or +33mm offset which rubs with 255/85 (33.3in)or probably more with 285/75(32.8in)

    Hey CJ,

Good option on the 130. I bought my 130 with a 2" set of coils already in it and some +2" Bilstein shocks.

Swapped the shocks and hardware for the Terrafirma Long Travel Kit, which is basically a ripoff of the Gwynn Lewis one.
because I ran the springs un retained I went with dislocation cones which meant Ive dispensed with the rear inner springs.
I dont know the exact rating of the springs in my 130 but they seem HD and they take a solid load in the rear and maintain height. I did a big trip up through Limmen National Park with 5 full spares (Its pretty remote and the other guy was paranoid and had no room. Lol Navaras!) and probably about 250kg more on top in liquids, gear and supplies. The rear was still level and she handled relly well.

    I have:
TF front extended shock mounts ($240 pr)
TF Rear top shock mounts (extended) ($240 Pr)
TF Rear cranked trailing arms ($500 pr)
TF Adjustable Panhard rod w/ Polybushes (Avoid this piece of **** and get one with rubber bushes) ($180)
Goodridge +4" extended brake lines (Cant remember were cheap from APT Fabrications)
    Stock front Arms.
TF Extreme Long Travel +5" Shocks. (98 bucks a corner from Sydney 4x4 Accessories)
TF Front and rear dislocation Cones Cant even remember how much these were.

To be honest in hindsight I think the Gwynn Lewis Hardware is cheaper and better, but also I know APT were doing suspension kits with basically all the same components pretty cheap. I'm very happy with the shocks, and for 98 bucks each they're pretty good to be honest. Ive done some tough trips with them since fitting (Limmen and Gregory National Parks as well as a few local mud runs) over a lot of k's worth of heavy corrugations and they still work fine IMO.

Heres a shot of the flex I get with this kit.

Thanks Wicks, that setup seems to work well
Did you need any caster corection bushes in the front? and what size wheel and tire are you running?

    thanks again

    Hey mate,

I've not got any castor correction in it at the moment, stock front shaft and stock arms with stock bushes. The main reason is I didnt want to change the arms without changing the prop for a wide-angle version. To be honest $$ were a factor too, postage from anywhere to Darwin is always a nightmare.

I know a new prop is a necessity for the PUMA, but for the TD5 not so much. I get good travel in the front end on the stock hardware, and theres no untoward vibrations or anything.

As far as tyres I'm running 255/85R16 KM2's on King rims with 0 Offset. They work perfectly IMO. And with the skinnier tyre I can usually inflate them quicker than my mates running 285's.
I dont get any rub with that combo either. 5 Tyres and Rims set me back $2250 fitted and balanced from Jax Quickfit when I was in Sydney.
I'm contemplating new front arms and prop to improve the front end flex, but I dont know which ones I'll go with yet.

I forgot to mention the Terrafirma and Gwynn Lewis Kits are set up to run Pin - Pin Shocks front and rear. Which is what the Terrafirma shocks are.

Les Richmond Automotive do what looks like a really good long travel kit and supply coils and shocks and I've heard really good reviews on their service, though I think their kit runs with Eye - Pin shocks in the rear (as per standard configuration). Just something to check out.
